Rising healthcare costs and a change in disease patterns over the years
means Malaysia needs to change its public health care approach. In the
past, health promotion and disease prevention was considered a public
health job only for governments. This approach needs to change if
Malaysia is to address rising levels of non-communicable diseases and
prepare for rapidly-spreading infectious diseases. One possible way this
can be brought about is, by changing the way health is funded for all
Malaysians.
Speaker: Professor Awang Bulgia Awang Mahmud FASc, Deputy-Vice Chancellor,
Research and Development, Unversity of Malaya, Fellow, 2013. The first
Malaysian doctor to gain a PhD in Medical Informatics, Prof Awang
Bulgiba is Professor of
Public Health (Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit) and was appointed
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) for the University of
Malaya on 16 August 2012. [ASM=Akademi Sains Malaysia | Malaysian Science Academy]
