Narrative Journalism Workshop

The workshop will focus on narrative styles of writing for both print and online media, and how story-telling techniques can be used to engage new readers and maintain old ones. It will include discussion of the components of good story-telling, as well as tips on scene-by-scene construction, listening for “the revealing quote,” and when to use first-person voice.

Instructor Janet Steele is an Associate Professor of Journalism at the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. Fluent in Indonesian, she has published numerous scholarly articles on media history and criticism, is currently working on a book on journalism and Islam in the Malay Archipelago.
