Formula One cars are among the fastest circuit-racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 350 km/h (220 mph) with engines limited in performance to a maximum of 18,000 revolutions per minute (RPM).

Engines must be no more than 2.4-litre naturally aspirated V8s, with many other constraints on their design and the materials that may be used. For the 2014, engine changes have been approved which will see the replacement of the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated V8 engines to a turbocharged 1.6 litre V6 unit. Engines run on unleaded fuel closely resembling publicly available petrol.
