Professor Peter Doherty is an Australian-born immunologist who, with Swiss colleague, Rolf Zinkernagel, won the 1996 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work on immunity to viruses. He is currently Laureate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Melbourne and Professor of Biomedical Research and Chair of the Immunology Department, St Jude Children's Research Hospital (SJCRH) in Memphis, Tennessee.

He is also the President of the Executive of the International Union for Immunological Societies and has received numerous awards and honorary degrees including the Paul Ehrlich Prize, Germany (1983); Gairdner International Award for Medical Science (1986); Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award (1995); Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1987); and was elected foreign associate to the National Academy of Sciences (1998).
